The Dystopian Aftershocks of 9/11

Ground Zero Mosque

After the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on U.S. soil, many American citizens began criticizing other individuals for their problems. The group of people hit the hardest by the 9/11 discrimination was people of the Islamic Faith. A very good example of the discrimination against Muslims is when their was going to be a mosque built near by ground zero and American citizens were outraged by the idea. "The imam leading the project to build the cultural center, including a prayer room, near the site of the September 11, 2001 attacks said there was a rise of what he called "Islamophobia" and the debate had been radicalized by extremists" (Morgan). Another term that began coming up and used is Islamophobia. This again can be related to whole idea that 9/11 events changed parts of  society in more of a dystopian manner because people of the Islamic faith were being associated for being terrorist like and looked upon as a negative aspects of life.

No Mosque Theme throughout the country

It’s one thing to oppose a mosque because traffic might increase, but it’s different when you say these mosques are going to be nurturing terrorist bombers, that Islam is invading, that civilization is being undermined by MuslimsAnti-Muslim Sentiment was brought up not only by a lot of the American people but also members in congress. "Republican Newt Gingrich, thought to be mulling a presidential run, recently compared the project for a Muslim cultural center near the September 11 site to planting a Swastika near Jewish monuments"(Morgan). When you have a leader stating that it is absolutely wrong to build a mosque, it will definitely trickle down to the average American citizen. It is not just at ground zero where Americans are protesting against a mosque built. This has been happening throughout the whole nation. For example in places like California, Tennessee, and Wisconsin had hundreds of protestors turn out for a march and at the community meeting just to ensure a local mosque would not be built. Even though this has been going on many people have mixed feelings about Islam as a whole. You have people that believe that Islam is good and the people of that faith deserve their own mosque to practice at, but you also have individuals, like Ms. Serfan, who believes "Islam is not about a religion. It’s a political government, and it’s 100 percent against our Constitution”(Goodstein).  Having this theme going on throughout the country, shows how this aspect of society is a dystopia because the living qualities of American muslims are becoming worse.
